The B2B sales and proposal glossary

Every deal runs on its own vocabulary. This glossary defines the terms behind RFPs, proposals, and modern sales workflows, in plain language, for the teams who live them.

Sales process

A sales process is the defined, repeatable set of steps a sales team follows to move a prospect from lead to customer, commonly prospecting, qualifying, discovery, proposal, negotiation, and close. A documented process makes selling consistent, coachable, and measurable.

Why it matters in B2B sales

Without a defined process, every rep sells differently and results are hard to predict or improve. A clear process lets a team forecast, spot where deals stall, and coach to specific stages.

It also reveals which steps are ripe for standardization, the proposal step being the most common, since it is repeated on every deal and often done inconsistently. A documented process is what turns individual talent into a repeatable, scalable revenue engine rather than a collection of personal styles.

The stages of a sales process

A typical process runs through prospecting, lead qualification, discovery, presentation or demo, proposal, negotiation, and close, often with onboarding as a final handoff. The exact stages vary by business, but the value comes from defining them explicitly, so everyone knows what "in proposal" or "in negotiation" actually means and deals can be tracked consistently.

Sales process vs sales methodology

These are related but different. A sales process is the stages a deal moves through, the "what happens when." A methodology like MEDDIC or a consultative-selling approach is the "how", the philosophy and techniques a rep applies within those stages. A team can run one process while layering a methodology on top; the two work together rather than competing.

A concrete example

A team maps its process into seven stages and discovers deals cluster and stall at "proposal sent." Because the step is now explicit, they can target it, standardizing the sales proposal so it is faster and higher quality every time, rather than treating each stalled deal as a one-off.

How it shows up in a modern proposal workflow

The proposal stage is where a defined process most benefits from automation. Cobl makes that step consistent and fast for the whole team, so the process runs the same way on every deal and the sales cycle tightens.

That consistency is the point of a process in the first place: when the proposal step is standardized and automated, it stops being the place deals go to stall and becomes a reliable, measurable part of the machine.
