The B2B sales and proposal glossary

Every deal runs on its own vocabulary. This glossary defines the terms behind RFPs, proposals, and modern sales workflows, in plain language, for the teams who live them.

CPQ (configure price quote)

CPQ (configure, price, quote) is a category of software that helps sales teams configure complex products or bundles, apply the correct pricing and discount rules, and generate an accurate quote or proposal automatically. It removes manual errors from pricing and shortens the path to a signed deal.

Why it matters in B2B sales

When products are configurable or pricing has many rules, reps quoting by hand make mistakes, apply the wrong discounts, and move slowly, exactly when speed matters. CPQ enforces the rules so every quote is accurate and approvable, which protects margin and keeps deals moving.

It is a core piece of the quote-to-cash process, the point where a configured solution becomes a number the buyer can approve. For teams selling anything with options, tiers, or volume pricing, CPQ is often the difference between a same-day quote and a two-day scramble.

How CPQ works

CPQ tools follow the three steps in their name. Configure: the rep selects products and options, and the tool constrains choices to valid combinations so nothing incompatible gets quoted. Price: the tool applies list prices, volume discounts, and approval rules automatically, flagging anything outside policy. Quote: it outputs a clean, accurate price quote or proposal, often routing for approval first. The result is that pricing logic lives in the system, not in a rep's spreadsheet or memory.

Why teams adopt CPQ

The payoff is accuracy, speed, and control. Accuracy, because pricing rules are enforced rather than remembered; speed, because quoting drops from hours to minutes; and control, because leadership can see and govern how discounts are applied across the team. Those three together directly affect margin and win rate.

A concrete example

A rep selecting a product bundle in a CPQ tool has options constrained to valid combinations, sees list price adjust automatically, applies a discount within approved limits, and produces a clean price quote in minutes, with no spreadsheet math and no pricing errors to unwind later.

How it shows up in a modern proposal workflow

CPQ handles the numbers; the proposal wraps them in the story. Cobl takes the configured pricing and generates the full, tailored sales proposal around it, so the accurate quote and the persuasive document stay in sync instead of living in two disconnected tools.

That connection matters because a correct price in a generic proposal still loses to a rival who pairs the same number with a compelling, tailored case, CPQ and proposal generation together deliver both.
