The B2B sales and proposal glossary

Every deal runs on its own vocabulary. This glossary defines the terms behind RFPs, proposals, and modern sales workflows, in plain language, for the teams who live them.

Sales collateral

Sales collateral is the collection of content and materials a sales team uses to educate and persuade buyers across a deal, including one-pagers, case studies, decks, and proposals. Good collateral gives reps the right asset for each stage and each member of the buying group.

Why it matters in B2B sales

Collateral is what lets a deal progress between conversations, and it shapes how a buyer perceives you when the rep is not in the room. The issue in most teams is not too little collateral but inconsistent, outdated collateral that reps recreate ad hoc.

Consistent, current assets speed deals and protect the brand; scattered ones slow them and confuse buyers. When five to ten people weigh in on a purchase, collateral is often what reaches the stakeholders a rep never meets, so its quality and consistency have outsized influence on the outcome.

Types of sales collateral

Collateral spans the funnel. Top-of-funnel assets, like a one-pager, sell sheet, or explainer, build awareness. Mid-funnel assets, case studies, a pitch deck, and comparison guides, build trust and support evaluation. Bottom-of-funnel assets, the sales proposal, ROI calculators, and references, help close. Matching the asset to the stage is a core sales enablement discipline.

A concrete example

Across one deal a rep uses a one-pager to spark interest, a case study to build trust, a pitch deck in the key meeting, and a sales proposal to close, each pulling the same story forward rather than restarting it. Because the assets share a consistent message, the buyer experiences one coherent narrative instead of four disconnected documents.

How it shows up in a modern proposal workflow

Rather than maintaining a sprawling drive of stale files, modern teams generate collateral on demand from one source of truth. Cobl produces tailored, on-brand assets from your core messaging, so every piece a rep sends is current and consistent.

That solves the perennial collateral problem, drift, where the version on the shared drive no longer matches current pricing, positioning, or brand. Generating from a single source means the collateral is right every time, without a marketing team policing folders.
